Pit bulls can be called America’s most loved and feared dogs at the same time. American homes have always kept pit bulls as loving and dignified pets, but a series of mutilation incidents over the years have created paranoia about the dog breed across the country.

The term ‘Pit Bull’ is a term that refers to three breeds of dogs: the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Their combinations are also called Pit Bulls. Pit bulls were originally from England. The American Pit Bull Terrier was imported to the United States from England in the 19th century. Of all the Pit Bull breeds, the American Staffordshire Terrier, simply called the AmStaff, is a descendant of the English bulldog, which was bred specifically for fighting. All Pit Bulls are characterized by their short, stocky yet strong bodies. They have wide mouths with long hanging tongues.

Pit bulls are considered the most athletic dogs in the world. They are descendants of the bear and bull fighting dogs used by cowboys in the past. Pit bulls can grab a bull by biting on the nose and hence the term ‘taking a bull by the nose’. However, Pit Bulls are also considered to be very affectionate with children. Several families that own Pit Bulls say that Pit Bulls are the best breed of dog around children and they are instantly and instinctively liked.

Pit bulls are temperamentally aggressive dogs. Some kennels breed dogs for dog fights, which still take place even though such fights are illegal. Even an ordinary pit bull would be undeterred to attack other dogs and sometimes even people if he was let loose. Several pit bulls in kennels have scars, indicating that they may have been involved in scratches in the past.

Due to their ferocity and violent disposition, pit bulls are being banned in several cities and states, Ontario in Canada being one of them. Their remains are being spayed, neutered and also treated with euthanasia. This has undoubtedly created a furor among dog lovers around the world.

Dog lovers decry the lack of mercy in the way pit bulls are treated. They maintain that pit bulls are just as aggressive as other dogs, and in the midst of loving and affectionate owners, they become so gentle that they can even be placed with small children without worry. The problem is the owner, not the dog. Pit bulls that are not cared for and poorly bred often become vicious. Also, a single act by some Pit Bull does not speak for the entire breed. Pit bull lovers are doing everything they can to save pit bulls through exclusive campaigns and slogans like “Punish the deed, not the breed.”

Pit bulls have become the center of a tug-of-war between authorities and animal lovers. Once a very lovable and well-liked breed, today they are viewed by many as a monster. The future of the breed, once the most beloved, remains shrouded in doubt.
